Privacy Policy
We built Velowindow to be useful, not to collect your data. Here's exactly what we do and don't do.
The short version: Velowindow doesn't have user accounts, doesn't store your data on any server, and doesn't sell anything. Your location is used only to fetch your forecast and find your city name, and we don't store it on any server. We use Google Analytics to understand how many people use the app.

Data we collect and why
Location data
Velowindow asks for your location in two ways:
- Search: You type a city or town name. That text is sent to the Photon geocoding API (by Komoot) to find coordinates. We don't log or store your search queries.
- Browser geolocation: If you tap "Locate me," your browser shares your GPS coordinates with the app. These coordinates are sent directly to the Open-Meteo weather and air quality APIs to fetch a forecast, and to Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) to look up your city name. They are never sent to our servers, because we don't have a server.
Your last-used location, ride type preference, and unit preferences (°F/°C and wind speed units) are saved to your browser's localStorage so the app remembers your settings between visits. This data never leaves your device.
Analytics data
We use Google Analytics (Google Tag Manager, measurement ID G-B2GGYG8TFK) to understand how people use Velowindow. Google Analytics automatically collects:
- Pages visited and time spent
- General location (country/region level, derived from IP address)
- Device type, browser, and operating system
- Whether you opened Velowindow as an installed app or in a browser
- Referral source (how you found the site)
This data is processed by Google and subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We use it only in aggregate to understand usage patterns: we cannot identify individual users. You can opt out of Google Analytics using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Data we do not collect
- We have no user accounts or registration
- We do not collect names, email addresses, or any personal identifiers
- We do not use advertising or sell data to third parties
- We do not use cookies of our own (Google Analytics may set cookies per Google's policy)
- We do not store location data on any server
- We do not track you across other websites
Third-party services
Velowindow relies on the following third-party services to function:
- Open-Meteo: provides weather forecast data. Your coordinates are sent to their API to retrieve forecasts. Open-Meteo is an open-source service and does not use the data for advertising.
- Photon by Komoot: used for location search (converting city names to coordinates). Built on OpenStreetMap data. See Komoot's Privacy Policy.
- Nominatim / OpenStreetMap: used for reverse geocoding (converting GPS coordinates to place names). Governed by the OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy.
- OpenFreeMap: provides the map tiles shown on desktop. Your browser requests them directly, so OpenFreeMap receives your IP address and the approximate area of the map. It states that it uses no cookies, accounts, or API keys. The map is not loaded on mobile.
- unpkg: delivers the MapLibre GL JS library that draws the desktop map. Your browser downloads it directly, so unpkg receives your IP address.
- Google Analytics: usage analytics as described above.
- Google Fonts: loads the fonts used on the site. Your browser requests the font files directly from Google, which receives your IP address as part of that request.
Your rights
Because we don't store personal data on our servers, there is nothing for us to delete, export, or correct on your behalf. Your localStorage data can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights regarding data held by our third-party services (primarily Google Analytics). You can exercise those rights directly with Google via their Privacy Checkup tool.
Children's privacy
Velowindow is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Velowindow after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
