Privacy Policy
We built Velowindow to be useful, not to collect your data. Here's exactly what we do and don't do.
The short version: Velowindow doesn't have user accounts, doesn't store your data on any server, and doesn't sell anything. Your location is used only to fetch weather — it stays in your browser. We use Google Analytics to understand how many people use the app.
Who we are
Velowindow is a free cycling weather forecast tool available at velowindow.com. It is operated by PushMedia. For questions about this policy, contact us at contact@velowindow.com.
Data we collect and why
Location data
Velowindow asks for your location in two ways:
- Search: You type a city, town, or zip code. That text is sent to the Open-Meteo geocoding API to find coordinates. We don't log or store your search queries.
- Browser geolocation: If you tap "Locate me," your browser shares your GPS coordinates with the app. These coordinates are sent directly to the Open-Meteo weather API to fetch a forecast. They are never sent to our servers — we don't have a server.
Your last-used location, ride type preference, and unit preference (°F/°C) are saved to your browser's localStorage so the app remembers your settings between visits. This data never leaves your device.
Analytics data
We use Google Analytics (Google Tag Manager, measurement ID G-B2GGYG8TFK) to understand how people use Velowindow. Google Analytics automatically collects:
- Pages visited and time spent
- General location (country/region level, derived from IP address)
- Device type, browser, and operating system
- Referral source (how you found the site)
This data is processed by Google and subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We use it only in aggregate to understand usage patterns — we cannot identify individual users. You can opt out of Google Analytics using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Data we do not collect
- We have no user accounts or registration
- We do not collect names, email addresses, or any personal identifiers
- We do not use advertising or sell data to third parties
- We do not use cookies of our own (Google Analytics may set cookies per Google's policy)
- We do not store location data on any server
- We do not track you across other websites
Third-party services
Velowindow relies on the following third-party services to function:
- Open-Meteo — provides weather forecast data. Your coordinates are sent to their API to retrieve forecasts. Open-Meteo is an open-source service and does not use the data for advertising.
- Nominatim / OpenStreetMap — used for reverse geocoding (converting your GPS coordinates to a place name). Governed by the OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy.
- CARTO — provides map tiles displayed in the app. Tile requests include your approximate map view area.
- Google Analytics — usage analytics as described above.
Your rights
Because we don't store personal data on our servers, there is nothing for us to delete, export, or correct on your behalf. Your localStorage data can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights regarding data held by our third-party services (primarily Google Analytics). You can exercise those rights directly with Google via their Privacy Checkup tool.
Children's privacy
Velowindow is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Velowindow after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
